It won't happen until 2013 or 2014, but Volvo President and CEO Stefan Jacoby today confirmed that the V60 PHEV will be coming to America. Speaking at a seminar in Washington, D.C., Jacoby said that, while the V60 plug-in hybrid is first being prepared for the European market - Jacoby called the 50-kilometer (32-mile) all-electric range and diesel range extender "tailor made" for Europeans - and will then be adapted for American tastes. We don't know all the details, but the big one is that the oil-burning mill will be swapped for a gasoline engine. This should make the V60 PHEV cheaper and more appealing for in the States. For more on the car, which will start limited production in November 2012, read this detailed post.

That the V60 plug-in hybrid will come to the U.S. isn't a total surprise, but it's nice to know for sure. Jacoby has hinted at this before and, when we got to drive the V60 last month, Volvo's Karl-Johan Ekman said that the V60 PHEV would bow in Europe, but that other markets could follow. If you were in the U.S. and had your fingers crossed that this meant you, good job.

Nissan to test charger-equipped roadside service vehicle

Nissan roadside service vehicle

Nissan, in conjunction with the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), has announced a joint trial program to test the feasibility of charger-equipped roadside service vehicles in southern Japan. A bit unexpectedly, Hitoshi Kawaguchi, Nissan's senior vice-president of external and governmental affairs, admits that:
As electric vehicles gain wider consumer acceptance, it is important to create a roadside assistance system that can help motorists driving electric vehicles which have run out of battery power, as well as to build a charging infrastructure.
Back in December of 2010, JAF conducted roadside assistance training for plug-in vehicles using a Nissan Leaf. The training included towing and roadside charging. This real-world deployment of Nissan's charging station on wheels is the next logical step in the training process. The four-wheeled charger hit the streets June 7th.

Report: Certain Chevrolet, Nissan owners most likely to die in a car crash?

2011 Chevrolet Aveo 630

We've got some sour news for you if you've got a Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet Cobalt, Nissan 350Z or Nissan Titan in your driveway. According to a new study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, owners of those particular vehicles are more likely to die in an auto accident than those who own other vehicles. That's thanks in part to the fact that those models aren't equipped with traction control. Automotive News reports that the IIHS study found that of the 26 lowest-rated vehicles in the study, none had the technology.

In the past, SUV drivers were the ones most likely to die due to the threat of rollovers, but new safety systems have changed that trend. The IIHS report now says that SUV drivers are among those who are most likely to survive an accident.

So, which vehicles came out on top? The Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Toyota Sienna, Ford Edge, Nissan Armada and Land Rover Range Rover Sport and LR3 were among the winners of the survey. That settles it, Aveo owners; time to trade it in for Range Rover.
