What's the dumbest last lap ever? [Video]

In racing, nothing is a sure thing. Until you pass that checkered flag, you haven't won — or even come in second. Nothing's worse than choking on the final go 'round. What's the dumbest last lap ever? More »

Back in February 2009, UK-based Lightning Car Company announced that it was intent on selling its electric GT sometime in 2010. Well, the Lightning, as one might expect of any fledgling automaker, is running way behind schedule. However, Lightning claims that its battery-powered GT has entered its "late prototype" phase and hopes to have the vehicle production-ready by spring of ... 2012.

With that covered, it's a relief to know the Lightning GT has hit the streets and will participate in a 12-month long "real-life" road test as part of the UK's Technology Strategy Board Ultra-Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator competition. The Lightning GT will be trialed under the same road and environmental conditions that a typical vehicle would encounter on a daily basis.

Since unveiling the GT back in 2007, significant modifications have been made. The proposed in-wheel motors have been ditched in favor of a rear-drive setup sourced from a German manufacturer. The electric GT supposedly sprints from 0 to 60 miles per hour in five seconds and the range is claimed to be more than 100 miles. However, with a projected price of £180,000 ($290,628 U.S. at the current exchange rate), finding buyers could be more problematic than getting the technology right. Hat tip to Mike!

The concept of a Q-ship sleeper car's been subtly eroded by vehicles increasingly unsubtle about their power. Does anyone see a new BMW M5 or E63 AMG and not notice the giant wheels, obvious badging and huge tailpipes? More »
