Report: Bill Ford, Jr. hints Mulally's successor will likely come from within Ford

Ford CEO Alan Mulally

Alan Mulally has no plans to retire just yet. The 65-year-old Ford CEO is still going strong at the helm in Dearborn, and is working to get his company back up to an investment-grade credit rating. Still, Bill Ford, Jr. explained to reporters last week that the former Boeing CEO's replacement will probably come from within the company.

According to The Detroit News, Ford went as far as to say it would be "very unusual" if Mulally's replacement came from outside. The executive chairman elaborated, explaining that Mulally holds "Business Performance Review" meetings every Thursday, encouraging execs from different wings of the company to participate and learn as much as they can about the business as a whole. In part, the meetings are designed to help "train the next generation" of leadership for the company.

First-ever European Electric Vehicle Congress to be held in Brussels this October

eevc 2011

The first-ever European Electric Vehicle Congress (EEVC) will be held in Brussels, Belgium in late October, 2011. EEVC aims to foster electrified vehicle-related discussions between research institutes, industry, non-governmental organizations and public authorities. The goal is to ensure that only the most promising and optimum technologies are selected, while taking into account environmental and economical constraints,

EEVC 2011 is being organized by Frédéric Vergels, secretary general of AVERE, the European Association of Battery, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles. Vergels says that sustainable urban mobility requires a roadmap and claims that the goal of EEVC is to foster synergies and develop a workable roadmap that has virtually no impact on the integrity of ecosystems and produces no more emissions than can be accommodated by the world's restorative ability.

Automakers BYD, Nissan, Renault, Audi, Tesla Motors, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen and Daimler are on the extensive list of EEVC 2011 participants.

First Drive: Delightfully Naughty Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0

Never mind the purity-white paint; Porsche?s latest 911?and last 997?is its naughtiest. It seems as though Porsche itself was caught off guard by the announcement of this special-edition 911. The company had shut down the line that would normally build the engine for a car like this, so, when the brass decided they needed one [...]

IEA says CO2 emissions hit record high in 2010, and 2020 reduction target "will be extremely challenging"

Smkoestack

Energy-related CO2 emissions in 2010 were the highest ever recorded, according to estimates by the International Energy Agency (IEA). After a dip in 2009, CO2 emissions are estimated to have soared to 30.6 gigatons in 2010, a five percent jump from 2008 levels.

In addition, the IEA estimates that 80 percent of projected emissions from the power sector in 2020 are already locked in, meaning that 80 percent of emissions in 2020 will come from power plants that are currently in use or under construction.

Dr. Fatih Birol, chief economist at the IEA, says that:

Our latest estimates are another wake-up call. The world has edged incredibly close to the level of emissions that should not be reached until 2020 if the 2 degrees Celsius target is to be attained. Given the shrinking room for maneuver in 2020, unless bold and decisive decisions are made very soon, it will be extremely challenging to succeed in achieving this global goal.
In terms of fuels, the IEA estimates that 44 percent of CO2 emissions in 2010 came from coal, 36 percent from oil and 20 percent from natural gas. Finally, the IEA concludes that economic growth - particularly in China and India - is partly responsible for the spike in CO2 emissions.
