Volkswagen Jetta price quietly increases by $500

Volkswagen has made a big deal about the 2011 Jetta's $15,995 starting price. After all, how many times have you seen those commercials that show a guy working hard to afford the new Jetta, only to find out that it's starting price had been lowered. And then there's the baby-holding dad that drops his cup as the baby drops his bottle after checking out the German sedan's bargain-basement MSRP.

At any rate, you can pick up your cup and get back to work, because the starting price of the Jetta has now been increased by $500. The VW website clearly shows that the S model, which comes equipped with an anemic 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a scant 115 horsepower, now starts at $16,495.

This isn't exactly great news for Jetta-loving budget shoppers, but we hear rising commodity costs is making it more expensive to build vehicles these days, so it isn't totally unexpected. On the bright side, only the entry S model has been given a price bump. The rest of the Jetta lineup is unchanged.

BMW showcases range of police, fire and paramedic vehicles at RETTmobil

With its SLS AMG first-response vehicle, Mercedes-Benz may have gotten our attention, but it's hardly the only automaker offering specially equipped emergency vehicles at the RETTmobil expo this year in Fulda, Germany. While Mercedes used the Gullwing to highlight its range of emergency vehicles, BMW is relying on the strength of its full model range to speak for itself.

Among the vehicles BMW is showcasing for the first responders and local government officials visiting the trade show this year is a 5 Series Touring with lights and sirens controlled directly from the iDrive system, and with a specially designed load floor extension with built-in fracture points that allow first responders to access all their equipment while reducing injury in case of a rearward collision.

In response to numerous fatalities caused by traffic colliding with police cars stopped on the side of the road, BMW is also showcasing a specially prepared X3 that is inherently easier to see due to its taller form, and also features additional LED lighting for increased visibility.

There's also an R 1200 RT paramedic motorcycle on display that integrates such features as radio equipment, siren, PA system, strobe lights, fire extinguisher, front crash bar and an electrically adjustable windscreen direct from the factory. Other vehicles on display include X1 and X3 crossovers and 3 and 5 Series wagons for police, fire and paramedic applications, along with the eye-catching 123d police car prepared by AC Schnitzer and the X6 ambulance we reported on back in 2009. Check 'em out in our high-resolution image gallery.

Toyota announces opening of U.S.' only pipeline-fed hydrogen fueling station

Shell hydrogen station in Torrance, CA

Yesterday, Toyota Motor Sales celebrated the grand opening of the U.S.' only pipeline-fed hydrogen fueling station. The station, a collaborative effort between Toyota, Air Products, Shell, South Coast Air Quality Management District and the Department of Energy, is located adjacent to Toyota's U.S. headquarters in Torrance, CA. For now, the facility will primarily dispense hydrogen into the automaker's fuel cell demonstration vehicles. Chris Hostetter, Toyota's vice president of product and strategic planning, says that:
Building an extensive hydrogen re-fueling infrastructure is a critical step in the successful market launch of fuel cell vehicles. We plan to bring a fuel cell vehicle to market in 2015, or sooner, and the infrastructure must be in place to support our customers' needs.
As landowner, Toyota leases the grounds to Shell for an undisclosed fee. As the station's owner, Shell works directly with Air Products, operator of the hydrogen pipeline that's located less than 50 feet from the station. The station has the ability to simultaneously fuel four vehicles and can dispense up to 50 kilograms of hydrogen per 12-hour day. The first, it seems, was a Honda FCX Clarity.

With the install of the hydrogen fueling station complete, the city of Torrance will join California's Hydrogen Highway initiative. Hat tip to Roy!
