Shell hydrogen station in Torrance, CA

Yesterday, Toyota Motor Sales celebrated the grand opening of the U.S.' only pipeline-fed hydrogen fueling station. The station, a collaborative effort between Toyota, Air Products, Shell, South Coast Air Quality Management District and the Department of Energy, is located adjacent to Toyota's U.S. headquarters in Torrance, CA. For now, the facility will primarily dispense hydrogen into the automaker's fuel cell demonstration vehicles. Chris Hostetter, Toyota's vice president of product and strategic planning, says that:
Building an extensive hydrogen re-fueling infrastructure is a critical step in the successful market launch of fuel cell vehicles. We plan to bring a fuel cell vehicle to market in 2015, or sooner, and the infrastructure must be in place to support our customers' needs.
As landowner, Toyota leases the grounds to Shell for an undisclosed fee. As the station's owner, Shell works directly with Air Products, operator of the hydrogen pipeline that's located less than 50 feet from the station. The station has the ability to simultaneously fuel four vehicles and can dispense up to 50 kilograms of hydrogen per 12-hour day. The first, it seems, was a Honda FCX Clarity.

With the install of the hydrogen fueling station complete, the city of Torrance will join California's Hydrogen Highway initiative. Hat tip to Roy!
